Mary and Martha

I sat there in a spell-like state
And listened to his word
His message spoke of love and life
Like none I'd ever heard
Enthralled by His true presence
I stayed there at His feet
Listening, learning, breathing
Transfixed upon my seat

I moved and hurried through the room
To treat our honored guest
Assuming I would do my part
And Mary had the rest
But as I cooked and welcomed Him
She sat there on the floor
Not moving, my frustration grew
And mounted with each chore

Time stood still, my heart felt full
I listened as He taught
I felt Him speaking, just to me
Absorbed by any every thought
These precious moments lingered
Of truths and lessons learned
Mesmerized by words of love
A fire in me burned

My head grew hard with worry
As she sat there unaware
Resentment boiling underneath
But no one seemed to care
I was doing right
True to life's command
Abiding by my hostess role
As Mary gave no hand

"Please tell her, Lord, to help me"
Martha's voice beseeched
While she was busy hosting
I was listening as He preached
Jesus answered gently
"Mary's choice was pure
While you have good intentions
You yield to work's allure"

"I care not if you serve me
With food and drink of wine
But rather that you sit with me
An offer you decline"
Sometimes we are caught
In the act of constant doing
We let the voice of action
Be one that we're pursuing

We all can be a Martha
Secure with rule and role
Sustaining social norms
Before we feed the soul
We are called to sit and listen
With openness of heart
The Spirit whispers hope
But we must do our part

It is in our simple being
Our trusting, child-like state
That love can enter in
And truth can satiate
You can hear Him if you listen
To the silence of the day
He gives us life of fullness
And guides us on our way
