Emmanuel

I came to earth a little child
Wrapped in swad'ling clothes
Born into the world as hope
A sign the Father chose
Most thought that I would come a king
To reign this realm on earth
But I was born in poverty
Of humble, virgin birth
My dream was not to overthrow
Nor split the world in two
Instead I sought to end divide
To breathe a life anew
My time was spent with lepers
With those you cast aside
I chose to be with those who wept
The poor, whom life denied
And so you did not recognize
That I was the Messiah
You claimed that I was blasphemous
And called me a pariah
The message that I came to give
You did not understand
I preached in deed and parable
Not by law's command
My victory was won
By death upon the cross
My strength in open weakness
Eternal life, through loss
Now each day, I'm sent again
Waiting to be born
In hearts of all who follow me
Whose faces I have worn
And still I dwell amongst the poor
Who struggle and believe
That life is found upon the cross
That death can yet conceive
I came to earth a little child
Meek, yet great in mission
To give you life through love
Pure, without condition
