Childlike Freedom

We come into this world, infused by heaven's dreams
Untouched by absolutes and notions of extremes
We come in bursts of brilliance; illuminating light
Moved by pure elation, unabsorbed by social rite
We come so free from burden, as children of the heart
Dancing in the movements of our deepest living part

And then we learn to live in a calculated way
We move in rigid rhythm as we go about each day
We form a world of "shoulds", of plans and false prescription
As time wears on we grow into a lifetime of conscription
We forget about our dreams; we dilute our colored thoughts
In a world of absolutes: of shoulds, have tos, and oughts

But our deepest living part can't forget her spirit's song
The one she danced to freely unafraid of right and wrong
And sometimes when we close our eyes, our dreams return again
Whispering in brilliant hues, "when, my child, when?"
And though our eyes may open and our dreams may fade away
We are bound to them by memories that live in present day
