Dark as night and light as day
But I don't see the world they do
And wonder how they got that way
Your skin is painted chocolate brown
While mine is shaded summer sand
But yet we are not limited
To colors that the sun has tanned
Sometimes you're electric blue
Filled with energy unchained
And I a deep dynamic red
Loving fully, unrestrained
Other times you're colored green
Newness flowing from your skin
And I a timeworn trusted brown
From memories of where I've been
At times we both are darkened black
Colored by our hurt and pain
Yet ebony of thunderstorms
Holds hope that sun comes after rain
Together we paint masterpieces
Dancing in vivacious strokes
Brushed against this worried world
Bound by ancient human yokes
Our colors are not opposites
This world is not of black and white
But people colored by their souls
Fires waiting to ignite
They tell us we are dif'rent colors
Shaded only by our skin
But still, we dance in hues of life
Infused by colors from within
