Searching

All I've got is me
All you've got is you
There's nothing we can take
When this life is through
Wealth will turn to waste
Fame to memory
Power long forgotten
Lost eternally
These things we cling to now
Are goods of fortune's earth
Constructed in our minds
To have a certain worth
We want, we own, we have
Yet in effect, we lose
As slave to our possessions
It's jealous gods we choose
With happiness our aim
We search in vanity
Looking for a sum
In our humanity
We place this full desire
On things of man's design
Believing truth of being
Is something we define
In pursuit of acceptance
Of power, wealth, and fame
We long for deeper meaning
But call it wrongful name
I search for Him in knowledge
You search for Her in pride
Yet God can't be found
Unless we reach inside
